It keeps a register of all software, hardware, and the tasks that your PC has.
If you use your everyday PC, the registry may be damaged due to missing files or a virus. This will cause your computer slow and sometimes it can cause hang-ups, errors, shutdowns, and sometimes you can stop your PC booting.
